Torrance’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

The City of Torrance has long been dedicated to environmental sustainability, implementing various programs and policies to promote energy conservation, waste reduction, and community engagement.

Energy Conservation Efforts

Torrance encourages businesses to adopt energy-efficient practices. Recommendations include tuning up air conditioning systems to reduce energy use by 5 to 25 percent, installing energy-efficient lighting to lower lighting energy use by up to 50 percent, and arranging refrigeration system tune-ups to decrease energy use by 5 to 25 percent. Additionally, installing high-quality, commercial-grade programmable thermostats can help save on cooling energy by 5 to 15 percent. Southern California Edison’s Energy Solutions for Businesses offers cost-saving steps and online energy surveys to assist businesses in becoming more energy efficient. The Energy Innovation Group manages a rebate program for LED lighting and provides free assessments to determine energy savings and rebate opportunities. Torrance residents and businesses recycle more than 10,000 tons each year through various waste collection, reduction, and recycling programs. The city participates in a school education program with the Torrance Unified School District to raise awareness about conservation and recycling. Torrance is a member of the Los Angeles County Recycling Marketing Development Zone program, which combines recycling with economic development to fuel new businesses, expand existing ones, create jobs, and divert waste from landfills. Additionally, the city participates in the Clean Bay Certified Restaurant program to recognize restaurants that prevent pollution from entering the Santa Monica Bay.
