Torrance Residents Advocate for Ban on Hydrofluoric Acid at Local Refinery

Residents of Torrance have intensified their efforts to ban the use of hydrofluoric acid (HF) at the local refinery, expressing deep concerns over the potential risks associated with the chemical. HF is utilized in the refining process to produce high-octane gasoline but poses severe health hazards if released into the environment.

Community members, alongside environmental advocates, have organized rallies and public forums to raise awareness about the dangers of HF. They argue that the chemical, even in modified forms like modified hydrofluoric acid (MHF), can form ground-hugging toxic clouds if accidentally released, leading to serious injuries or fatalities.

Local leaders have echoed these concerns. Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn stated, “MHF is simply too dangerous to use. It is a flesh-eating, low-crawling, toxic vapor cloud. Our communities will not be safe until this chemical is gone.”

In response, the refinery’s management has maintained that their use of MHF is safe and complies with all regulatory standards. They emphasize that the facility has been operating with MHF for over 60 years without any offsite impact.

The debate continues as residents and officials seek alternative solutions to ensure community safety while addressing the operational needs of the refinery.
